Dirty smoke

The new-season smoky eye is a little bit messy and a tiny bit dirty – like last night’s make-up. It’s all about a soft, smudged shadow with dark, moody hues – and lashings of liner.

Seen at Chanel, DVF, Tom Ford, Vera Wang.

Frankie Rozwadowska, group beauty editor: “Smoky eyes are always in, so when Tom Ford upped the ante with this dirty, messy look, I was in heaven. Easier than a classic smoky look, this is all about imperfection in the most perfect way.”

Get the look

1 Apply black eye pencil all over the lid and waterline and then smudge it all over the lid.

2 Next, smoke it out with black eyeshadow.

3 Apply layers of black mascara to finish.

Key products

Nars Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow in Sycorax, Dh145, Sephora; IsaDora Flashing Volume Mascara, Dh119, Paris Gallery; Benefit Eyeliner, Dh125, Sephora.

Berry lips

This season lips all over the catwalks boldly boasted shades of berry. Whether you go for a full-on coat of colour or apply it as a stain, it’s the new-season power pout.

Seen at Roland Mouret, Topshop Unique, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry Prorsum, Zac Posen.

Louisa Wilkins, editor: “I love the simplicity of this trend – clear skin, strong brows, statement red lips. And there is a 90s vibe to it, which I am always partial to. It’s a great look for a glam evening out, but would be too dramatic for the school run, or the office.”

Get the look

1 Exfoliate lips gently with a toothbrush and apply a balm before you begin.

2 Put on a bold red lipstick and define the edges with concealer. For longer-lasting lip colour, opt for a lip pencil to fill in the lips, then go over with a lipstick again if you wish.

Key products

Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Majella, Dh130, Sephora; Dolce and Gabbana Perfect Matte Concealer, Dh190, Paris Gallery; Lancôme Midnight Roses Brow Shaper, Dh125, Harvey Nichols.

Purple haze

From lilacs to violets, the new shadow shade this season is purple. Runway eyes were peppered with plum and hints of metallic over the lid, and lightly brushed with eyeliner.

Seen at Matthew Williamson, Derek Lam, Vera Wang, Sally Lapointe.

Melany Demetillo-Reyes, art editor: “Dramatic eye make-up isn’t usually my go-to look, but this purple trend is pretty enough to try on nights out. It gives my face a touch of glam.”

Get the look

1 Apply a wash of purple eyeshadow all over the lid and below the lash line with a pointed pencil brush for a messy yet pretty look.

2 Generously apply mascara to finish.

Key products

Nars Duo eyeshadow in Kuala Lumpur, Dh175, Sephora; Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch Mascara, Dh120; Max Factor Colour Effect Dip In Eyeshadow in Ultra Violet, Dh39, Boots.

English rose

Soft make-up with a touch of colour on the cheeks and lips – a fresh summer look with minimal effort and make-up.

Seen at Chloé, Erdem, Christopher Kane, Ralph Lauren.

Tabitha Barda, deputy editor: “This subtle trend is very doable and would work well for everyday. It isn’t that different from what I would usually wear, but involved a lot more blush and a rosy lip, which could brighten up my beauty for S/S15.”

Get the look

1 Apply a blush on the apples of your cheek for a natural sun-kissed look. To add dewiness to the skin, dab a highlighter on the cheekbone.

2 Finish up with a rosy colour all over the lips.

Key products

Nars The Multiple in Copacabana, Dh195, Sephora; Dolce & Gabbana Lipstick in Succulent, Dh158, Paris Gallery; Burberry Beauty Light Glow Blush, Dh182, Bloomingdale’s.

Gold rush

Shimmering, glittering washes of metallic colour were layered all over catwalk lids and the inner corners of the eyes with pearl finishes, sequins, glitter and crystals used to adorn and illuminate.

Seen at Barbara Bui, Loewe, Alexander Wang, Balmain, Ashish, House of Holland, Anna Sui, Jonathan Saunders.

Catherine Harper, writer: “I’d spent the day before the shoot on the beach, so the gold worked a treat with my newly acquired tan! It’s an easy and realistic take on bronzing up your look this season.”

Get the look

1 Swipe gold eyeshadow all over the lid and then apply bronze eyeshadow to the outer corner of the eye in a sideways V shape and blend.

2 Pop a shimmer on the centre of the eyelid for more of a metallic, gilded look.

3 Define the eyebrows with gentle hair-like strokes for a natural-looking set of brows.

Key products

Nars Dual Eyeshadow in Isolde, Dh175; Benefit Gimme Brow, Dh124, both Sephora; Diorskin Nude Tan Matte Powder, Dh243.

Loud lashes

Long and luscious or clumped and cute – the bigger the lashes the better. This season, sixties-style lashes are the look to lust after.

Seen at Rochas, Nanette Lepore, Prada, Givenchy.

Sonam Basantani, beauty stylist and writer: “I absolutely love this look; all you need is dramatic lashes and the rest of your make-up can be pared back. Perfect for day – and just slick on thick liner to take you to night.”

Get the look

1 Swipe a natural matte eyeshadow all over the lid and blend.

2 Apply the eyeliner close to the lash line. Add false eyelashes, and a dot below the lash line.

Key products

Nars Eyeliner Stylo in Carpates, Dh135, Sephora; Huda Beauty Lashes in Samantha, Dh72, Sephora; Chanel Compact Eyeshadow, Dh150, Sephora.
