Bleach teeth with berries
“Strange as it sounds, the malic acid in strawberries can act as tooth-whitening agent,” says Sonam. “This is a great fix for those who don’t like the harshness of a professional treatment. Mash a strawberry into a paste and mix with a little baking soda. Spread the mixture on to your teeth and leave for five minutes, before brushing away with a regular toothbrush and toothpaste. Don’t forget to floss to get rid of any pesky strawberry seeds!”
Blowdry your eyelashes
“Make your own heated eyelash-curlers by simply blasting your regular pair with a blowdryer,” says Sonam. “The heat helps the hair to curl better and makes for a longer-lasting look.”
Head for the mayo
Dani says, “A friend’s mum told me this trick for silky tresses when we were teenagers... and it works! Apply mayonnaise all over your hair and leave on for 20 minutes. To maximise the effect, blow it with a hair dryer on a medium setting while you’re waiting for it to work its magic.”
Swap your shaving cream for conditioner when you next lather up your legs — it softens the hair, which makes it a breeze to shave — and it leaves skin soft and silky.
Chapstick your cuticles
“So you thought medicated lip balms were just for your lips? They actually work extremely well on cracked, dry cuticles too,” says Madiha. “Apply liberally and massage in for maximum hydration and protection.”
Wake up with a spoon
“A great quick-fix for tired-looking eyes is to put a metal spoon in ice-cold water and press it against your under-eye area,” says Frankie. “The chill helps to instantly de-puff and make your eyes look brighter and more awake.”
A cup of tea cures everything even sunburn! Take a bath in very strong tepid black tea — the tannic acid in the tea alleviates the burning sensation and helps the skin to heal.
Power-powder your lashes
“My mother taught me this trick for fuller lashes — dust them with powder before applying mascara,” says Madiha. “Mascara goes on more smoothly and creates more volume. For an even more dramatic effect, layer the powder and mascara in several coats.”
Brush your lips
“Pave the way for full, smooth lips by exfoliating with a slick of lip balm and a toothbrush, says Madiha. “Apply lip balm and leave it on for a few minutes to allow it to absorb, then use the toothbrush to exfoliate and scrub off the excess flakes.”
Steam your nails matte
Intrigued by the matte nail trend but don’t want to invest in the polish just yet? Nail aficionado Sonam says you can DIY it with steam. “Put a pan of water on the boil and apply your polish. While the nails are still wet, hover your hands over the steam and, voila, a lovely mattified finish.”
Oil away eyeliner
“If you’ve run out of make-up remover, try coconut oil or olive oil, which are both effective natural alternatives to dissolve make-up gently,” says Frankie.
