Since having her second baby, Poppy, eight months ago, Sophie McLean, 29, has barely had a second to herself, let alone time to think about doing her hair or wearing stylish clothes. We wanted to show the young mum how she can balance her time to look and feel glamorous while taking care of Poppy and two-year-old Lilly.
Going for the chop
There’s nothing like a good haircut to freshen up your look, and with little ones on your hands, there’s a practical reason, too. Jehnna Mahoney from Slam salon chose to snip Sophie’s long waves into a trendy, sophisticated and more manageable lob (long bob).
Rocking some chic new locks (and baby Poppy), Sophie then helped fashion stylist Lindsay Judge to choose a selection of pretty but practical outfits, while make-up artist Hanna Lisa created a series of beauty looks to go with each one.
Lunch with the girls
Dress, Dh299, Mango; Shoes, Dh99, New Look; Bag, Sophie’s own; Necklace, Dh95, Stradivarius.
Stylist’s tip: Floral prints are sure to brighten up your day – pair a colourful dress with some printed flats for a smart-casual look that’s both practical and on trend.
Make-up artist’s tip: Add a dark eyeshadow above and below your eyes to achieve some fast-fix drama. Put gloss on your lips for an instant glamorous touch that’s really simple to achieve.
Hair stylist’s tip: You can do an easy braid in less than two minutes and it completely changes your whole look, giving a feminine touch to your style – perfect for a day out with the girls. What’s more, it keeps your hair off your face when you’re busy with your little ones.
Sophie says: “This is definitely the kind of dress I’d choose to wear, and the print is great for hiding my tummy. Flat shoes are a must when I’m pushing the pram around constantly so these pumps are great”
Dress, Dh189, New Look; Shoes, Dh1,050, Reiss; Clutch, Dh750, Reiss.
Stylist’s tip: A chic black dress will not only make you feel instantly glamorous, the slimming dark colour flatters all shapes. A fit-and-flare cut like this one will cover any areas you might be feeling conscious of after giving birth.
Make-up artist’s tip: Adding a red lip to your look will instantly vamp things up. If red’s not your colour, opt for a bright pink or coral to give you the wow factor.
Hair stylist’s tip: Putting curls in your hair is a surprisingly easy way to make you look and feel glamorous. If you don’t have time to style with tongs, do it in your sleep instead – pop in some overnight rollers and voilà!
Sophie says: “It’s been ages since I dressed up this much and it’s definitely given me the confidence to get back out there! I hope my husband takes me out to dinner tonight as I feel so glam!”
T-shirt, Dh185, Marks and Spencer; Jeans, Dh260, Marks and Spencer.
Stylist’s tip: Been in your PJs all week? It might just be you and baby at home, but you can still look and feel gorgeous in a casual jeans-and-tee combo. Jazz it up by choosing a top with a little sparkle in it.
Make-up artist’s tip: For an easy fresh-faced look in the morning apply CC cream to give you a light coverage and finish with a natural peach blush and mascara.
Hair stylist’s tip: Even if you don’t have time to blow-dry your hair properly, always power dry it before you go to bed or in the morning. Move your hair from side to side as you dry it to give it volume. Sophie’s new lob is so much easier to handle than her long hair was, meaning she’ll actually have time to do it.
Sophie says: “This look is really easy to wear and I still feel glamorous even though it’s super-comfortable and casual”
