1. Ramadan Kareem

Ramadan is a time for peace, consideration and reflection – and, of course, it’s also a time for family. What could be nicer than sitting down to eat together? There are hundreds of iftars on offer around Dubai this month. We’re impressed by the Ramadan tent at The Palace, Downtown, for just the right balance of luxury and tradition. There’s a host of delicious dishes from the Gulf region and beyond, including traditional delights such as baba ganoush, sambouseks, lamb ouzi and a temptingly sweet array of desserts including everyone’s favourite, umm ali. 04 514 9459

2. Out and about: Abu Dhabi

A spot of culture

There’s a host of family activities on offer at The Galleria, Al Maryah island, to celebrate Ramadan. Expect local artists, falcon displays and arts and crafts for little ones, as well as traditional Arabic coffee and dates.

Total beauty

St Regis Abu Dhabi’s Remède Spa has joined forces with Sisters Salon and The Raw Place to offer the new Beauty By Expert experience, combining personalised options for skin, hair and detoxification to ensure you’re looking your best. 02 694 4553

3. Keeping it Reel

Check out the new Reel Cinemas complex at the extension of upmarket leisure and lifestyle destination City Walk. As well as regular screens, there are no fewer than three Platinum movie suites, complete with a private lounge, full food and beverage service and fully reclining leather seats with pillows and blankets. You’ll even get the attention of a ‘cinematic butler’. Now that’s the way to watch a movie! Find out what’s on at

4. It’s market time

Love your weekly markets? Fear not, summer doesn’t always put an end to them! Ripe Market simply moves indoors; the leafy atrium of Times Square is the location for the hot months and markets are held every Friday from 9am until 3pm. Expect all your regular stall-holders to be there with their goodies.

5. Rib-roaringly good

There’s a new menu at The Rib Room, Jumeirah Emirates Towers, and it’s got plenty of options, even for those who don’t eat meat. Starters were four giant-sized crab legs bursting with succulent flesh, and tuna tartar so melt-in-the-mouth it was hard to believe we were eating fish at all. Then we had boneless rib-eye and the Kansas City bone-in strip for mains; both cooked to perfection with tasty sides of grilled asparagus, spiced baby carrots, buttered broccolini and seasoned French fries. We finished with the obligatory over-indulgence of Rocky Road Root Beer Pot de Crème and a selection of artisanal cheeses. It’s safe to say our old favourite continues to get a big thumbs-up for a perfect date night or special occasion. 04 432 3232

9. Read all about it

The Sleep Revolution by Arianna Huffington

Ever heard of a sleep-deprivation crisis? Huffington says as a generation we’re risking our health, sanity, relationships and careers with our cavalier attitude to the importance of a good night’s sleep, and nothing short of a full-on reboot is going to solve the problem. The Sleep Revolution is an interesting look at sleep science, an analysis of what happens when you don’t get enough, and a useful guide to what to do to fix the problem.
