An irreverent manifesto for ambitious women, it’s humorous, inspiring and totally topical as it’s about to be made into a Netflix Original series, due for release next year. Dh39, Virgin Megastore.

Swish Peruvian venue Coya in Jumeirah will be hosting an exhibition titled Na Mila Asili (‘tradition and culture’ in Swahili) by artist Naj from September 4. Combining materials like ceramic, sand, body paint and balloons, it looks at the cultures of New Zealand, Japan and Morocco and examines the role of heritage in the modern world.

9. New afternoon tea

Penrose Lounge

We’ve always thought that DIFC has a hip Manhattan vibe and Penrose Lounge in the recently opened Four Seasons DIFC wholeheartedly embraces it, bringing a modern New-York-style influence to the traditional afternoon tea. With a tiered stand that looks more like a modern-art sculpture than the traditional chintzy affair, the savoury selection features smoked salmon bagels, Maine lobster rolls and Foie Gras mousse, followed by sweet treats made by ex-Hakkasan pastry chef Sanchit Datta, including raspberry financier and chocolate marquis – as well as the obligatory scones, of course. Dh160 with Jing tea selection, Dh230-Dh255 with Jing tea and Italian or French bubbles. 3-6pm daily, 04 506 0200.

Cooking class

Swap your standard brunch or dinner for a course that shows you how to make it before you eat it

On the spice trail

This is ideal if the only thing you know about Indian food is that it tastes good. Guests can volunteer to help the chef, or just sit back and learn. Chef Jitin Joshi talked us through various spices, including a fascinating history lesson, and then showed us how to use them in marinades for meat to be cooked in a charcoal tandoor, or just barbecued or grilled. The lesson lasts an hour, after which you enjoy the regular brunch from 1pm to 4pm. You also get an apron and chef’s hat, some spices and a USB with recipes to try at home. Dh695pp; the next class is on September 16. Phone 04 438 3222 for details.

Pasta masterclass

A fun and satisfying class led by Chef Leonardo Maltese, where you learn to make several types of pasta, including linguine, tortellini and ravioli. The chef first demonstrated the techniques before letting us have a go as he walked around, giving tips on getting our dough just right, or the best setting for the pasta machine. For those who easily mastered tortellini, he had some more challenging shapes to try. Afterwards we tasted our efforts, as well as amazing pasta created by the chefs. Dh475pp, every Friday from 1pm, booking is essential, 04 423 0982.

Top chef

Feel like a professional chef in this teaching kitchen with your own fully equipped workstation and limited class numbers. It’s easy to follow the chef as there is a giant screen above him, but he and his fellow chefs also walk around to make sure you’re on track. We tried the Arabian Delights Monday class (3pm to 4.30pm, Dh155pp), and were thrilled with the success of our mezze, but there are times and classes to suit everyone. We love the premium two-hour class (Dh555pp) for an epicurean education followed by a three course dinner and take-home goodies, or a special no-adults kids’ class (Dh250pp). To find out what’s available, call 04 457 3457.

Amazing value Friday brunch at Spice & Ice, JLT

With its modern decor, a live DJ playing dance hits old and new, excellent food served to your table, alongside a molecular-style street food station, this laid-back brunch is pure fun. You can order repeatedly from the menu of traditional favourites such as samosas, chicken tikka masala, rogan josh and desserts, accompanied by unlimited house beverages and soft drinks. Best of all, it’s just Dh199. From noon to 4pm, call 04 421 1356 to book.
