1. Donald Trump won the US election
Regardless of your political views, it was pretty much widely accepted businessman and reality TV star Trump was trailing Hillary most of the way to the polls. So it was something of a shock to the system when he romped home with a convincing win. We’re waiting with bated breath to see how the next chapter of US history unfolds…
Yes, consider them consciously uncoupled… Well, not officially just yet, but in June the UK voted to up sticks and leave its long-standing marriage with the EU. It was a move many denounced as a really bad idea but, with months or even years to go until the actual separation takes place, it’s probably too early to tell.
3. Kim Kardashian robbery
We’re not normally ones to follow reality junkies the Kardashians, but the sheer audacity of this one had us speechless. Robbers managed to get into the Paris hotel where Kim was staying, subdue her and make off with millions of dollars’ worth of her jewellery; how, exactly – with all her security – did they manage that?
4. The migrant crisis
This time last year we were all shocked and saddened by image after image of babies, women, children and men who had drowned in the Med, as they tried to make their way to safety in Europe. And this year, we’re even more shocked and saddened it’s still going on. Families are still risking their lives to flee persecution and keep themselves safe; babies, children, women and men are still dying on a daily basis. It’s got to stop.
5. The ongoing spread of Daesh
At the end of 2015 we were all horrified at the actions of Daesh – the so-called Islamic State – in Syria and across swathes of Iraq. This year, we’re horrified it’s still going on. Executions, beheadings, bombings, rapes, slavery… It’s beyond our comprehension. As we come to the end of another year, we hope this is the last time we’ll have to look back on a year filled with such evil.
