Clarissa and Naser Sultan live with their son Samuel Kai, their dog Enzo and their bearded dragon Cleopatra. Clarissa sat down with us to tell us more about their beautiful home…

We’ve been in Dubai for seven years but in this villa for two years. It’s been a no-stress progress, step-by-step. When we have the time, we’ll make it a weekend project. A lot of the decorative items we picked up on holiday trips over the years to places like Bali, Madagascar and Cape Cod. My husband and I also enjoy a bit of DIY – we made some of the furniture and did some of the artwork ourselves. We even installed the pond in the garden ourselves.

If I had to describe our home, I would say that it is chilled, natural and warm. It think our home reflects us as people and our lifestyle... We keep it simple and fun and throw a bit of intrigue into the mix.

One of our first major purchases was a handcrafted wooden chest we picked up in Madagascar. It was the first real souvenir we bought that didn’t fit in our luggage – we absolutely love it.

When it comes to choosing stuff for our home, we have certain things that we gravitate towards. We adore natural wood and casual design. When choosing pieces, we might know that something’s missing from our home, but don’t really rush to find it. We just wait to stumble upon something gorgeous that we love.

My husband’s brother, Hamad Sultan at ESAS Architects, is an award-winning architect, urban planner and furniture designer. He has definitely inspired us over the years. He encourages us to think about keeping simple but elegant forms, leveraging natural beauty and flowing spaces.

We also have a few gorgeous pieces as custom gifts from Nena Bizri at Namliyi+ designs. We have some handcrafted wood side tables that are engraved with illustrations of me, my husband and our dog.

For inspiration, we like checking out Houzz, Fancy and Etsy app. We’ll have a look before starting a project to get ideas on rooms, furniture combinations, colours and materials.

If I had to choose my favourite part of the house, I would say the courtyard area outside – I love to relax there in the evening, with the sound of running water from the pond, and just zen out. My husband would say his favourite room is the man cave, of course. He likes that he has all his stuff in one place – his motorbikes, surfboards... Even his bearded dragon Cleopatra is in there. It’s also a bit of a statement about what we consider to be important space in a home.

The most important thing in our home is our dog Enzo. No home is complete without an animal’s love – he’s family. If he’s not there, the home feels empty.

To other people putting together their home, I would say take your time. The cool stuff shows up when it shows up. So relax and just wait for it.
