Most people seek happiness. In fact, happiness is often the force behind what we do. But sometimes life doesn’t always go as you planned. Between job problems, relationship issues and financial concerns, it’s easy to get frustrated or stressed. Although you may not be able to control every situation, you can control your attitude and how you react. No one’s life is perfect. Even the rich and famous have problems. But happiness is a choice and one you can make every day. These are all a good way to start off:
1 HELP OTHERS
It may sound corny, but lending a helping hand can make you feel better about yourself and the world around you. Several studies including one conducted at the University of Minnesota found that people who regularly volunteer tend to have improved psychological well-being and higher self-esteem. 2 LIVE WITH GRATITUDE
It’s easy to take what you have for granted. We all do it every day. But if you stop right now and remember what you have to be grateful for, there are probably quite a few things. Whether it’s your job, friends, partner, pet or health, it’s easier to be happy when you live with gratitude. Consider starting a gratitude diary, where you write down three things you are grateful for every day. Alternatively The LightHouse Arabia and Miracles Worldwide host various workshops and seminars throughout the year to encourage you to be grateful and mindful of what you have.
Exercise has a lot of benefits from health to helping with weight loss. But it also can boost your happiness. When you exercise, your body releases “feel good” chemicals including dopamine and serotonin that can combat depression and help promote an overall sense of well-being. Next time you’re feeling down or stressed out, consider going for a jog or bike ride. Better yet, incorporate workouts into your daily life.
4 TAKE A CHANCE
You probably have heard the saying life is short. Well, it’s true. Life goes by fast, and you don’t want to regret not doing the things you dreamed of. But taking a chance does not necessarily mean living on the edge and taking needless risks. It means going after what you want in life even if it takes you out of your comfort zone. This could be anything from getting involved in amateur theatreto taking a creative writing class or finally doing that art course you’ve always thought about.
Have you ever noticed how much better you feel after having a good laugh with a friend? It’s not just the laughter that helps (although that’s important). Most people have a need to be around others. Socializing helps you have a sense of belonging, feel supported and promotes overall happiness. Regardless of how busy you are, make time for the people you care about – whether that means booking in a ladies night with the girls or just a quiet coffee with a mate.
6 SLOW DOWN
Life is often fast paced. With all you have to do each day, it’s easy to move through your days so fast you don’t have time to enjoy them. Take a few minutes each day to just relax, listen to music, meditate, pray or do nothing at all. Just taking a few minutes to slow down can help you regroup and prioritise.
7 PRACTICE LIVING CONTENTLY WHILE WORKING TOWARDS GOALS
It may seem like a contradiction to be content, and still strive for more. But it’s not. Being content does not mean you forget about your goals. When you are content, you can be happy in the moment even as you are working towards your goals.
