Reader Korena’s makeover: Top tips from a professional

We share advice from makeup artist Kate Randall on how she created this youthful look

Korena, 39, from the United States says:

“I wanted to learn a new way of doing my makeup. I’ve been using the same brown eyeshadows since my sister gave me an Urban Decay palette about six years ago. Plus I wanted to learn how to do ‘going out makeup’ as I end up doing my makeup the same for day and night. The main thing I learnt from the sessions was not to be afraid of colours. Also I learnt that lipstick is my friend. I normally use a gloss, but lipstick made the look more finished. Foundation is also something Kate showed me how to use properly. Kate made my face look a bit longer and have more shape, which I liked. I still can’t master the same look, but I’m trying. The experience was great – it was nice to learn some new tips and so many friends complimented me on my makeup that day and said how nice it looked. Thanks Kate!”

The Tricks

Strong eyes and brows

“I started Korena’s eyes with a caramel base. You get a much more intense colour, while retaining a softness, when you layer eyeshadow up. I slowly built up the colour, blending all the time. Once the colour on the eyelid was right, I put a splodge of matte highlighter right in the top of the eyebrow arch… Some people think you should do a line of this highlighter under the outer edge of your eyebrow, but the technique is much more effective when you pop
a small bit right up in the top of the arch.”

Long-lasting eyeliner

“Illamasqua Precision Gel eyeliner is my favourite eyeliner ever. It’s intense so it is black when you want it to be black and it won’t budge. I can go diving with it on and it will still be there at night.”

A youthful base

“The most youth-giving tip is a flawless base. Young people have flawless skin, so that’s what we want to try to create the impression of. If at the start of the day, you can smooth your complexion with foundation, or even just with a tinted moisturiser, it will give you a lift and make you look younger.”
